Hey!, it’s been long since my last update, also the server was down for weeks.. Anyway, I’ve been uploading some WIP images about a barn in my WipsFolder, and there are some low-res screenshots in my last post (Febreaury!). During the last week I’ve been shooting HD renders after work and the past weekend, composing, color correction, fixing-those-horrible-things-you-dont-see-in-lowres. This is my first scene since Blender haves a compositor and render-passes support.
Click on the image below to see the LD version:
The software I used this time was surprisingly Blender 2.41 for fraka, and 2.42 and 2.43 versions for the barn and composing work. Then GIMP for making some textures and doing some tweaks, at last was Photoshop, for minor stuff and things-Im-so-stupid-that-i-dont-know-how-to-make-them-in-gimp.
This image doesn’t have raytracing, just the character as it uses AO and some HDR. All the rest are Spot lights with irregular and soft buffer shadows.
The whole scene is actually made of 3 different .blend, the first one is for Fraka, the character. The second file contains the house, watertank, and all but the mountain that belongs to a third file, with the moon, both made with the Sculpt tool, and finally the sky and clouds.
The most complicated file is the main one, it has 4 renderlayers for the barn, 3 more for the watertank, and another one for the grass at the front. Each renderlayer have its own renderpasses, all composed in the same file.
For the curious people, the grass around the barn have 2 particle generator meshes, one for short and strong fibers, and another for a little bit more long and messy grass, in total 180.000 particles. However, the grass around the watertank has another 140.000 particles, the grass at the front another 60.000, both roofs (barn and watertank) makes another 40.810 particles, at last but not at least, Fraka adds 40.115 more fibers, it makes a score of almost half a million particles. What? if I like particles? sure!
Doing the HD renders (1920x1080px), in MultiLayer (file created by Blender, it contains all the information about the renderlayers and it passes, it’s float and in .exr format). My computer wasn’t enough for dealing with such data, and the only solution was to work by groups and in scenes, composing the barn alone with the grass in one scene, then mix the result with the watertank in another scene, then mix it with the character, and then mix it all with the background, sky and clouds.
Here are some screenshots and videos about the making of..

Anyway.. I hope you all like it, this work took a while but here it is finally.. now I can blend without feeling me bad for leaving all my works in a permanent “WIP”.
Any questions or insults are welcome!, just write down a comment or mail me about it.
