Venom's Lab Training DVD

Hi all!, many new features are appearing in Blender so fast that it’s almost impossible to learn it all at once, but you have to start somewhere.. the most interesting feature to me was the brand new particle system, it’s huge!, thats why I decided to use my free time in trying to get ride of those buttons in all the new 5 (yes, five!) panels, I missed a few.. well, a lot.

Dan!
Daniel, AKA Dan!, is the result of this experiment trying to learn new stuff, well.. you can’t actually see the new particles in Dan, it is mostly about the shading and the way you work with them, at first I was thinking in adding hair to the whole character, but finally it just doesn’t looked quite good.. so I decided to just put some hair in the center of the body.. and maybe in the legs and neck.

For the stats junkies, 100.000 particles were used in Dan (many emitters, parents/childs) and each of this renders took less than 2 minutes in a Sempron 3400 single core, while Fraka -less than a year ago with almost the same number of particles (old system) tooks almost 4 min to render in an Athlon 3800 dual core, not even want to talk about memory usage.. So, particles have been optimized so much lately, now the shadowbuffers and the particle strands are threadeables! so you can separate the work load in all your cores, and this means *lot* of improvement in rendering speed.

Particle rendering is So fast now that you can’t stop adding particles!, like in this ugly render:
hairy dan

I had a good time playing with this, want to try this by yourself? you need a recent Blender build, take one from GraphicAll.org =)

It’s useless to say that the character has no image textures at all (except for the eyes), just hair and one material for the whole character, painted with VertexPaint for trying color schemes more easily.

Regards!

Great post, Pablo. It’s one thing to read about all these new Blender developments on the developers list or BlenderArtists, but to see them used in a practical example with your render statistics to compare makes it much more useful. Thanks.

This certainly makes me want to learn how to use particle more seriously. It’s an area I have only tried a little in Blender.

yo tambien experimente con el sistema de particulas nuevo, y con las nuevas caracteristicas de las nuevas subversiones y ahora si que no hay casinada que envidiar al software de pago que rima con maya. si ese dan es un pollo como fraka entonces no hay mucho de nuevo aparte de el pelaje(o plumaje)

ya lo vi mejor y se diferencia bastante de fraka. si te descargas una nueva subversion, encontraras en la ventana de materiales la opcion cubic para unos resultados suavizados del shader difuso

What a gorgeous website! I love the sense of fun and energy in the design! :)

I also absolutely love your character work. I’m glad I bumped into your site. It makes instresting reading about some of the more advanced features of blender that I’ve not tried yet… like particles.
