“So, you’re making a DVD, right, but.. how?”
Here a brief description on my take at a video-tutorial-making pipeline:
01. Idea!
First of all, you have to think ahead what you’re going to show, and what would be the best way possible, sometimes is easy and simple, but sometimes can take many hours, while thinking and making tests of what could be cool/worth to show and explain.
Tools: Cup(s) of coffee, along with lotsa mate as well.
02. Video!
The second step is Recording the video, shut down everything, close the door, put some nice music on, open Blender as fullscreen, press ‘Record’ and don’t ever look back!.
Tools: For this I’m using recordMyDesktop, in its pyGTK version (gtk-recordmydesktop package in Ubuntu repos). It works flawless!, long time ago I was spoiled about how good CamStudio worked on Windows, and complaining about how complicated video recording was on GNU/Linux, but I’m more than happy with recordMyDesktop now.
03. Editing the Video!
In this step you usually cut parts, I don’t tend to do this since I want people to see the whole process, but I may add a “welcome screen” to the tutorial, a small image/video on top as example/explanation, or some hints here and there, also speeding up sometimes is a must, small tasks like setting up material indexes can take quite a bunch of seconds and aren’t really interesting, or simply the video is too slow to run at realtime, and maybe 0.5x or even 1x faster can save some time while still showing the process clearly.
Tools: Blender’s Video Sequence Editor, along with the IPO Curves editor [R.I.P., now Graph Editor in 2.5x].
04. Recording Audio!
So, I got the video with its final length, now let’s add some voice to it!, at the right is a small picture from the Blender’s e-shop room!, which is so quiet and full of stuff around that can be easily converted into a full Audio Recording studio facility with great acoustic!.
First I do a small recap from the video, watching it completely and talk out loud like if I was recording it, if it’s OK, then is time to record! Spanish audio first, then a glass of water, and then English audio track afterwards.
Tools: Audacity.
05. Final Edit!
Once I got the audio ready, is just a matter of bundling everything together into once single piece, for this I just add the audio tracks to the Blender’s Video Sequence Editor, adjust some small things, do an export for spanish, then one for english, and voilá! Tutorial ready
Tools: Blender’s Video Sequence Editor, along with the IPO Curves editor, and The GIMP/Inkscape if some graphics are needed.
So that’s it!
About the subtitles, a friend of mine is writing them in Spanish (using Jubler), for later translation into English, and then send all over to people around the globe! This week I got new volunteers for translating Venom’s Lab! into Portuguese, Greek, and Chinese! looney community!
A whole DVD made in an Open Source Operating System, using Open Source tools, and releasing the result as Open Content, Creative Commons. Ain’t that cool?
Ok, enough blogpost fun for now, gotta get back to work!
Hugs
Pablo

Awesome, man! I am wanting to create a video tutorial for CGCookie.com, and had considered recordMyDesktop, but I was opting for Camtasia Studio (or Freez if I can’t get Camtasia.)
Bravo! Keep going, man.
Thanks,

I’m using gtkrecordMyDesktop to do a video critique for someone, and I’m having trouble using .ogv with the sequence editor. It looks like a YouTube brain fart. Is there some setting or procedure that I’m missing? The video plays fine in Totem.
No rush,
MTracer.
